A native of Spartanburg, Margaret Nowell attended college at the University of Georgia, where she graduated cum laude with dual degrees and a minor in Spanish. While at the University of Georgia, Maggie was a member of the NCAA Division I women’s track and cross country teams and received recognition on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. After earning her undergraduate degrees, Maggie matriculated to the University of South Carolina School of Law, receiving her Juris Doctor law degree in 2011. While in law school, Maggie was a member of the Mock Trial Bar, through which she received the distinguished Reese D. Williams Trial Advocacy Award. She was also a member of the Moot Court Bar, where she received honorable distinction as a member of the Order of the Barristers. During her summers in law school, Maggie served as an intern in the Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Spartanburg and was a summer law clerk to the Honorable Kay G. Hearn at the South Carolina Supreme Court. Upon graduating from law school, Maggie returned to Spartanburg, where she began her practice with The Cate Law Firm in 2011 before joining her husband, Mark, at Nowell Law Firm, LLC in 2020. Maggie devotes her practice exclusively to family law, handling matters ranging from custody and child support issues to adoption, divorce, and other domestic relations matters. In 2014, Maggie was selected by the Spartanburg County Bar Association to receive the C. Bruce Littlejohn Young Lawyer Award for her contributions to the Spartanburg legal community. Maggie was first recognized by Thompson Reuters as a Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2020 and has received this prestigious award each year through 2024. This award is bestowed upon a select group of lawyers for their high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Maggie has also been recognized as a member of the inaugural class of the South Carolina Family section of the American Inns of Court, having been nominated for this prestigious honor by local judges and area attorneys. In her spare time, Maggie serves her community in a variety of ways, including recently completing two terms on the Board of Directors for the Hope Center for Children, and serving on the Spartanburg County Bar Family Law Committee. Maggie understands the hardship family law matters can create and the importance of helping clients through these difficult times with compassion, dependability, and respect.
